Because it was my sister's birthday, our family decided to spend an overnight stay at Gamay Balai Resthouse in Brgy. Trece, Bulan, Sorsogon. It was already my family's second visit, but it was my first time experiencing the place. Since we were coming from Irosin, I honestly expected the drive to take much longer because the property's official address is in Bulan. To my surprise, we arrived in less than 30 minutes, making it a convenient getaway even for families traveling from neighboring towns. From the moment we arrived, I could already understand why my family wanted to come back.

Trece, Bulan, the resort sits right at the boundary with the municipality of Irosin. Because of this unique location, the owners had to secure business permits from both municipalities. As a fun trivia, this is one of the few places in Sorsogon where you can technically be in two towns at the same time. Also, just few minutes of walking from the gate of Gamay Balai, you are already in the boundary of another town, Matnog.
A Beautiful Mix of Modern and Native Filipino Design
One of the things I appreciated most about Gamay Balai Resthouse is its thoughtful design. Instead of sticking to just one style, it combines modern architecture with traditional Filipino elements, giving guests two different experiences within one property. The modern villa is spacious enough for large families and groups. Inside, you'll find a cozy living area with comfortable sofas, a Smart TV, a dining area, and a fully equipped kitchen. The ground floor also has a bedroom, while the upper level provides additional sleeping areas that can comfortably accommodate bigger groups with small attic room. The open layout makes it easy for everyone to gather, chat, play games, or simply relax together.
Just across the property is the charming A-frame native-inspired cabin, and this easily became my favorite spot during our stay. Living in the city for many years has made me appreciate simple things even more. The wooden interiors, high ceiling, and freshly installed nipa roof gave the cabin a warm and authentic Filipino feel. I could still smell the fresh scent of the nipa leaves, something I haven't experienced in a long time. Sitting there while enjoying the cool breeze made me appreciate the beauty of traditional Filipino craftsmanship.

What I really liked about Gamay Balai Resthouse is that it encourages people to spend time together. Near the entrance is a spacious covered area that can serve as a waiting lounge, dining space, or venue for birthdays and small celebrations like ours. There's also outdoor chairs and tables overlooking the pool where you can enjoy coffee, meals, or simply catch up with family.
Towards the back of the property is another open native-style hut that's perfect for playing board games, sharing stories, or simply relaxing while enjoying the peaceful surroundings. We found ourselves spending plenty of time outdoors because the entire property feels open, breezy, and surrounded by nature.

The swimming pool is another highlight of the property. It combines a shallow area for children with a deeper section for adults, allowing everyone in the family to enjoy the water safely. Around the pool, you'll find plenty of open space where you can lounge, take photos, or simply admire the scenery. At night, the pool lights create a cozy atmosphere that makes evening swims even more enjoyable.
One feature that I unexpectedly loved was the wide lawn covered with healthy green carabao grass. It looked so soft and inviting that I couldn't resist taking off my slippers and walking barefoot for a while. If you enjoy grounding or simply appreciate the feeling of cool grass beneath your feet, you'll definitely love this part of the property.
The landscaping also deserves a mention. The trees and flowery plants all make make the property feel more like a private vacation home than a commercial resort. It has a calm, laid-back vibe that makes you want to stay outdoors and enjoy the scenery.

There are a few sari-sari stores nearby if you need basic supplies, but it's still more convenient to buy your groceries before arriving.

Those simple moments reminded me why I enjoy visiting places that let you slow down and reconnect with nature.
Celebrating my sister's birthday here made the occasion even more special. We laughed, shared meals, swam, played games, and simply enjoyed each other's company without feeling rushed. Sometimes, that's exactly what a family getaway should be.
