Things You Should Know About Puerto Princesa Underground River

The Puerto Princesa Underground River in Palawan is declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To be recognized and be given this title under this specialized branch of UN, an entity should  have spectacular beauty and universal value.This underground river is also included in the New Seven Wonders of Nature voted worldwide so when I went to Palawan last February, I said I have to see this no matter what. The river that serves as the portal to go inside the cave is so clean that its color is greenish. It is only knee – deep but there are a lot of small fishes swimming unmindful of the tourists getting in and out of the boats… a testament that this place is still very preserved. Inside the cave there are two parts: the Cathedral and the Supermarket which made me think, is there a divine intervention or some unexplained phenomenon that is accountable for the creation of so many images in the rock formation that resemble to so many things in this world and even beyond?

Things You Should Know About El Nido, Palawan

Living in a city for how many years have made me emotionally and physically frail that when I went to El Nido, Palawan I almost did not want to leave.  The breakfast in front of the beach watching the waves hitting the shore and boats floating from different directions,  locals and tourists interacting in different ways and most of all the remoteness of the place all made me forgot everything that worries me back home.  I feel like my life paused in a few days that I was not doing my office work and I am not squeezing in between those passengers trying to get in inside the metro train. 

I loved that morning when I was walking in the shore with my camera I saw this teenage boy dragging this wooden boat to the sea. As I prepare click the button to take a photo of him all set to sail, my jaw dropped because the wooden boat apparently is smaller than his body size  and looks like a toy to me.   I felt worried! As I click the button I saw him paddling his way graciously and in a few minutes he was there floating and finding his way surrounded by bigger boats.

Back From a Half – Work and Half – Vacation Trip!

From December up to the day before my trip to Palawan, I was arranging other people’s trips that I don’t have time to mind my own. I wanted to make sure that before I leave my clients going to Panagbenga Festival of Baguio and the 18th Hot Air Balloon Festival are all fine. I didn’t gooled much of my itinerary of what to do and where to go instead I read travel blogs just to get an idea of the place. I arrived 2pm on February 21 which is my birthday and right at that moment I was walking the streets and asking the locals that pass by for the most affordable place.

Then I went straight to Puerto Princesa City Coliseum – a local government’s office that gives visitor’s entry permit to anyone who wants to see the Subterranean Underground River. A woman who was working in that office upon learning i have “no idea” of my trip referred me to a guy from a travel agency outside. He quoted me P6k for a 3D/2N stay in El Nido including accomodation, activities and roundtrip Puerto Princesa to El Nido. 

But I realized I am here for a half – work and half- vacation trip! So I said no and decided to backpack my own. The next day I took an 11am trip to El Nido and arrived 6pm. Yes it is a seven hour trip! Few minutes before reaching the bus terminal we passed to a view of a mountain that looks like a rock formation or rock formation as big as mountain surrounded by a blue – green ocean. “Omigosh, I am in a paradise!” I whispered.

Puerto Princesa Underground River is 1 of the New Seven Wonders ofNature

The Philippines’ Puerto Princesa Underground River, the Amazon rainforest, Vietnam’s Halong Bay, Argentina’s Iguazu Falls, South Korea’s Jeju Island, Indonesia’s Komodo and South Africa’s Table Mountain were named among the world’s new seven wonders of nature, according to the organizers of New7Wonders, a Swiss foundation.

New7Wonders was founded in 2001 by filmmaker Bernard Weber in Zurich, which is based on the same principle of the seven ancient wonders of the world. More than 440 contenders in 220 countries aspired then trimmed down to a shortlist of 77, then cut to 28 finalists. The final seven were voted via telephone, text messages or Internet social networks.

The results announced are provisional and based on the first count of votes. It is possible that there will be changes until finally  winners are confirmed which will be announced early 2012 according to New7Wonders.

Puerto Princesa’s Palawan Underground River is among the 28 finalists in an online search for New Seven Wonders of the Nature. Palawan Underground River is a unique and magnificent river located at the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO and one of the most biodiverse conservation areas in the world. As described in the New7Wonders website, this place features a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2km navigable underground river, reputedly the longest subterranean river in the world with major formations of stalactites and stalagmites inside. At the mouth of the cave, a clear lagoon is framed by ancient trees growing right on the water’s edge.

Started last September 2010 and will end this November 11, 2011, Palawan Underground River  needs more votes against :  Dead Sea, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Maldives, Grand Canyon, Jeju Island, Bay of Fundy, Black Forest, Iguazu Falls, Angel Falls, Yushan, Uluru, Galapagos, Milford Sound, Bu Tinah Island, Great Barrier Reef, Halong Bay, Komodo, Amazon, Mt. Puerto Princesa's Palawan Underground River is now in the top spot among the other 27 international finalists in an online search for New Seven Wonders of the Nature. Palawan’s underground river is a unique and magnificent river located at the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO and one of the most biodiverse conservation areas in the world. Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn is calling more Filipinos here and abroad to support voting our very own Palawan underground river through www.new7wonders.com/n7w. Helping him are Tourism Secretary Ace Durano and mall heir Henry Sy Jr.  who launched a campaign in Mall of Asia last Aug. 13st. Globe, Smart and Sun cellular companies are also helping out for taking in votes for PPUR through text messaging. Subscribers can text PPUR, PPUR7 or PPUR15 to 2861. Palawan Underground River was in 13th slot two weeks ago and it needs more vote to stay on top of the list since the voting time is not over yet. The online contest will end officially on Nov. 11, 2011.

Joining Palawan Underground River in the list are:  Dead Sea, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Maldives, Grand Canyon, Jeju Island, Bay of Fundy, Black Forest, Iguazu Falls, Angel Falls, Yushan, Uluru, Galapagos, Milford Sound, Bu Tinah Island, Great Barrier Reef, Halong Bay, Komodo, Amazon, Mt. Vesuvius, Table Mountain, Masurian Lake District and Mud Volcano. Most of these finalists are found in Europe and Latin America. The latest ranking result was chosen by 58.38 percent of females who joined the online poll, with 41.62 percent of the voters comprised of males. Voting won’t cause Filipinos a single drop of sweat as there are two ways: either online or text messaging so please vote for the Palawan underground river!
